2023 Washington Rootstock Field Day

Join us for our second Washington Rootstock Field Day! Hosted by Inland Desert Nursery and Washington State University Viticulture Extension, with support by Western SARE.
Attendance will be limited to 50 people, to facilitate vineyard tours and discussion. Registration will close on 7 July 2023.
9:00 – 9:15 AM – Arrival and Check-in
9:15 – 9:50 AM – Rootstock Selection and Choice – Jean Dodson Peterson, WSU VE. Fundamentals of the different rootstock species and breeding lines, and how they might respond to different environment and management scenarios.
9:50 – 10:10 AM – Designing Rootstock Field Trials: Part 1 – Michelle Moyer, WSU VE. What you can and should do when designing an on-farm trial, and how to design one that fits your other farming needs.
10:10 – 10:45 AM – Designing Rootstock Field Trials: Part 2. Working individually or in teams, design a mock rootstock trial that will help you find answers to the questions you might have. Trial designs will be briefly reviewed and discussed so as to highlight best practices and common pitfalls.
10:45 – 11:00 AM – Refreshment break
11:00 – 11:20 AM – Practical Advice for Rootstock Establishment – IDN Team. The how, when and how-long advice regarding protecting the graft union from potential cold damage during the dormancy period.
11:20 – 11:45 AM – The Western SARE Rootstock Trial at IDN – IDN Team. See the rootstock trial, which was planted in 2021. Ask the IDN team about their irrigation set-up, and what we have learned about how the different rootstocks affect the scion in these early establishment years.
11:45 AM – 12:00 PM – Workshop wrap up, closing comments, and surveys.
