2020 Harvest Lab Intern | Wine Boss | Richland, WA

Wine Boss is looking for Harvest Lab interns who are eager and committed to learning, growing, and gaining valuable experience working with premium fruit from the Red Mountain AVA. We specialize in high-quality, small-lot, red wine fermentations. This is a seasonal full-time harvest internship position. Start and end dates are generally between August and November.

Working harvest is a rewarding, yet demanding, opportunity. Applicants are to be serious, trustworthy, and punctual. Interns are expected to work six, 10+ hour shifts a week with one scheduled day off per week. Schedules will be determined once the winemaking team assesses 2020 grape processing needs. Flexibility is required: weekend work, late nights, and early mornings should be expected. Applicants must have a positive attitude, be physically fit, and be willing and able to jump in, learn quickly, and participate in all harvest activities as required. Though the description states office work, this is still a physical job that demands physical work and applicants should expect to participate in most, if not all, cellar activities at some point.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Processing vineyard samples for maturity (Brix, pH, TA)
  • Working with clients and winemaking team to provide maturity data in a timely fashion
  • Operation, calibration, and maintenance of auto-titrator and other laboratory equipment
  • Daily fermentation rounds (Brix, Temp, etc.)
  • Must inoculation, chemical, and nutrient additions
  • Daily sample collection from Fidelitas Red Mountain tasting room to Richland production facility
  • Data entry and work order completion
  • Morning and afternoon cap management (punchdowns, roller barrels, etc.)
  • Laboratory cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance
  • Cellar cleaning and sanitation
  • Additional lab activities as directed by winemaking team
  • Cellar support as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow directions, ask questions (it is always better to ask during harvest, no matter what, no question is too dumb), and carry out assigned tasks from the winemaking team when directed
  • Ability to be on your feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be proficient in excel and be able to use a computer with good typing skills
  • High school diploma with science laboratory classes/experiences and basic math skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and to their surroundings
  • Applicants must be reliable, hard working, motivated, work well with others, and be excited to learn from our experienced winemaking team
  • Ability to comply with company hazard and safety standards
  • Ability to be seated at a computer for long periods of time
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast paced environment
  • Can multi-task

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Winery production/harvest experience
  • Higher education in viticulture & enology, chemistry, geology, biology, or other relevant science fields is preferred
  • Laboratory experience
