Jean Dodson Peterson

Dr. Jean Dodson Peterson is the Founding Chair of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at Washington State University (WSU), where she has established herself as a leader in academic innovation and student-centered education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and Enology with a Minor in Managerial Economics, as well as her Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Horticulture and Agronomy, all from the University of California, Davis.

Prior to her tenure at WSU, Dr. Dodson Peterson served as both an Assistant and Associate Professor in the Department of Wine and Viticulture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). During her time at Cal Poly, she chaired her department’s curriculum committee and served on the college-level curriculum committee, playing a pivotal role in shaping the department’s vision and structure during its formative years. Her career reflects her strong commitment to creating impactful academic programs that combine rigorous scholarship with practical, real-world applications. Dr. Dodson Peterson also holds a certification in effective college instruction from the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), underscoring her expertise in the use of evidence-based teaching practices to enhance student learning outcomes.

During her time at WSU, Dr. Dodson Peterson has created and leads the VE Connects Initiative, a transformative program designed to enhance the student experience through community-building, streamlined pathways for transfer students, and experiential learning opportunities aligned with industry needs. Her advocacy for students is further evidenced by her establishment of the WSU Viticulture and Enology Student Support Fund and the department’s Experiential Learning Fund, both of which provide critical resources for academic development and hands-on learning opportunities. These efforts demonstrate her deep commitment to preparing students for success in their chosen field and in their broader personal and professional endeavors.
