Guest Seminar: THE OXHRATOXIN A STORY: What we already know and what we need to know
December 1, 2022 @ 12:00 am - 1:00 pm
Presented By: Dr. Massimo Ferrara
Dr. Massimo Ferrara is a research scientist at the Institute of Sciences of Food Production (ISPA), National Research Council (CNR), in Bari, Italy. Dr. Ferrara will discuss Ochratoxin A (OTA), a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species which is responsible for contaminating many food products including cereals, coffee, cocoa, grapes and derivatives. OTA is a potent nephrotoxin, classified as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). OTA contamination of grapes is strongly related to plant phenology, geographical area, meteorological conditions/microclimate and varies from season to season. Under a Climate Change (CC) scenario there is the need to understand how CC could impact fungal colonization and OTA contamination of grapes. The question is: are the current best agronomical practices, prevention and mitigation strategies enough to counteract the upcoming scenario?
Seminar will be offered in-person at the WSU Wine Science Center or via Zoom:
