Biography
Jean Dodson Peterson is the Founding Chair of Washington State University’s Department of Viticulture and Enology, where she is leading the growth of a dynamic and student-centered department dedicated to excellence in education, research, and extension. Her leadership has focused on building a strong foundation for the department through strategic planning, curriculum development, and meaningful partnerships that support students and the wine and grape industry.
Her research has focused on grapevine physiology and production, with particular emphasis on rootstock scion interactions and the environmental and management factors that influence vine performance, fruit composition, and vineyard sustainability. She is committed to connecting research, teaching, and industry engagement in ways that strengthen student learning and create lasting impact for the broader viticulture and enology community. She also holds the ACUE Certificate in Effective College Instruction, reflecting her commitment to evidence-based, student-focused teaching.
Jean has also led major efforts in undergraduate curriculum redevelopment, experiential learning opportunities, student crisis support services and graduate program development, helping position the department for continued growth.
