Job Description
Position will prepare the successful candidate to assume the vineyard manager role. In that capacity candidate will manage a crew of about 20 in the slow season to about 50 in the growing season. Candidate will supervise, implement and participate in all aspects of vineyard management which include:
– soil testing to determine what ameliorations are needed and to spread such fertilizers
– pruning the vines and then tying the shoots
– as the growing season takes off, define and implement a comprehensive spray program.
– manage all aspects of trellis management including shoot positioning, hedging, leaf removal
– working with the winemaker organize and execute the harvest
– maintain light mechanical repairs on the various machines including oil and filter changes. Heavier repairs may be performed by an outside mechanic.
– participate in management meetings and collaborate with outside consultants
Preferred Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in viticulture.
Familiarity with farm equipment use and maintenance
Familiarity with spray programs
Good people skills
Positive attitude that may be communicated to the rest of the team
Candidate will be required to become a licensed NY State applicator
