SUMMARY:Sulfur Fungicide Toxicity in Washington Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michelle Moyer\, Viticulture Professor at Washington State University\, will share results from trials assessing the risk of sulfur fungicide “burn” under high temperatures. \nDuring the webinar\, she will discuss the following: \n\nDoes sulfur formulation matter?\nWhat is the role of spray adjuvants in the potential for phytotoxicity?\nIs temperature the sole environmental driver?\nThe field conditions required for high incidence and severity of sulfur “burn” are not common in eastern Washington; are fears of phytotoxicity overstated?\n\nWashington Advancements in Viticulture and Enology (WAVE) is the Washington State Wine Commission’s seminar and webinar series focused on wine research. WAVEx is the condensed\, shorter webinar series. Washington State University is a co-sponsor of the WAVE and WAVEx events. \nRegister here for the free webinar open to all \nTo learn more about previous WAVEx webinars. \n About the Washington State Wine Commission: The Washington State Wine Commission (WSWC) represents every licensed winery and wine grape grower in Washington State. Guided by an appointed board\, WSWC provides a marketing platform to raise positive awareness about the Washington wine industry and generate greater demand for its wines. Funded almost entirely by the industry through assessments based on grape and wine sales\, WSWC is a state government agency\, established by the legislature in 1987. \n  \nRESEARCH INQUIRIES: \nJulie Tarara\, Research Program Manager\, Washington Wine \n(206) 669-7127 / jtarara@washingtonwine.org

SUMMARY:WAVEx Webinar - Heat Mitigation Insights for Washington Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Markus Keller\, Viticulture Professor at Washington State University\, will share results from field trials testing the use of undervine foggers and the use of supplemental irrigation before or during heat waves. He will discuss impacts on vine growth\, yield\, fruit composition\, and water use. Dr. Lav Khot from WSU’s AgWeatherNet will present the implementation of AgWeatherNet Smart Farms for sensor-guided heat stress management. He will also highlight smartphone and weather-guided web tools available within AgWeathertNet to help growers with effectively mitigating heat stress. \nDuring the webinar\, they will discuss: \n\nCan undervine misters reduce canopy temperature in the fruit zone without increasing disease risk?\nIs supplemental irrigation a meaningful approach either before or during heat waves? Does the approach prompt more shoot growth?\nAre there carryover effects to the following year?\nHow do the new AgWeatherNet tools improve management decisions related to heat waves?\n\nRegister here \nWashington Advancements in Viticulture and Enology (WAVE) is the Washington State Wine Commission’s seminar and webinar series focused on wine research. SUMMARY:2026 Viticulture Intern Boot Camp
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis all-day workshop is targeted to provide a baseline level of knowledge to company interns specializing in activities or training related to Washington State viticulture. The idea is to train interns in: 1) What Happens Throughout a WA Growing Season\, 2) Pest and Disease Scouting\, 3) Cold Damage and Yield Estimation\, 4) Nutrient Disorder Identification and Understanding Fertilizers\, and 5) General Internship Planning and Organization. Participants will have both in-class and in-vineyard experiences\, and will also begin to develop a resource guide they can reference throughout their internship and beyond. \nTarget Audience\nIndividuals classified as “interns” in a Washington State Viticulture industry-related field (vineyard management\, crop consulting\, etc). \nInterns are typically early-career individuals\, working in a mentored position for a professional or a company. Most interns are often students enrolled in formal post-secondary education in viticulture or a related field.  This workshop does assume a basic level of knowledge/understanding of horticulture/viticulture/farming.  \nLearning Objectives\nAfter participating in this boot camp\, interns should be able to: \n\nUnderstand the timing of major viticulture activities in Washington State vineyards.\nIdentify major pests and diseases in Washington Viticulture\, and how to best scout and sample for them.\nIdentify cold damage\, and understand how and when to best estimate yield in vineyards.\nDistinguish between most major nutrient deficiencies\, read a soil and tissue test report\, and understand basic fertilizer calculations.\nEffectively plan out their internship reports\, and learn how to be proactive in engaging their internship mentors.\n\nRegistration\nRegistration is limited to 25 people\, with preference given to those completing an internship at a Washington\, Oregon\, or Idaho viticulture-related business. Please see the list of topics in the agenda below for a better understanding of the day’s events. \nRegistration URL: Registration is Closed \nRegistration fee: $70 \nPre-registration is required\, and there is an attendance cap to facilitate participant engagement. Registration will close on May 8\, 2026. \nThe fees for this workshop cover all workshop handouts\, and printed extension publications. \nLunch and snacks have been generously sponsored by Wilbur Ellis. \nAnticipated Agenda – Friday\, May 15\, 2026\nMorning:\n\n8:00 – Welcome\n8:15 – Round Table Introduction\n8:30 – Module 1 – A Viticulture Year in Review\n9:00 – Module 2 – Pest and Disease Scouting – Classroom\n9:45 – Break\n10:00 –  Module 2 – Continued\n10:45 – Transition to Field\n11:00 – Module 2 – Pest and Disease Scouting Activity – Vineyard\n12:00 – Transition to Classroom / Lunch\n\nAfternoon:\n\n1:00 – Module 3 – Cold Damage Assessment and Yield Estimation – Classroom\n1:30 – Transition to Field\n1:45 – Module 3 – Yield Estimation Activity – Vineyard\n2:15 – Return to Classroom / break\n2:45 – Module 4 – Vine Nutrition and Nutrient Disorders – Classroom\n3:15 – Module 4 – Interpreting Soil and Tissue Tests – Activity\n4:15 – Module 5 – Professional Development and Optimizing Your Internship Experience – Classroom\n4:45 – Session Wrap-up\n\nAnyone attending this program who requires auxiliary aids or services\, please contact Michelle Moyer at 509-786-9234 or michelle.moyer@wsu.edu.
