Supporting the region’s winemakers and grape growers—that’s the focus of viticulture and enology research and extension. We help growers cultivate healthy plants and winemakers craft wines that express the unique characteristics of Washington’s wine-growing regions.
Our scientists take their research and extend it to the people who need it most—grape growers and winemakers. Through seminars, publications, field days, and other Extension activities, viticulture and enology research serves the wine industry and our communities.

WSU Viticulture Extension hosts a variety of workshops each year to benefit growers and vineyard workers. Workshops provide valuable information, research updates, demonstrations, and recertification opportunities.

Certificate Programs
The Viticulture & Enology Program offers two non-credit professional certificates tailored for those interested in careers in the grape and wine industry. These certificate programs are taught by Washington State University faculty and leaders in the Washington wine and grape industries.

Ravenholt Lecture Series
The Ravenholt Lecture Series brings grape and wine industry professionals to WSU to share their research and professional perspective. The series is made possible through an endowment from the Albert R. Ravenholt Foundation. Ravenholt, an early pioneer in Washington’s wine industry, was founder of Sagemoor Vineyards. 2-3 Ravenholt lectures are held annually on topics relevant to growers and winemakers in the Pacific Northwest. Winemaking Seminars

WAVE Seminars
WAVE (Washington Advancements in Viticulture and Enology) is an annual seminar highlighting research outcomes supported by Washington’s wine industry. Sponsored by the Washington State Wine Commission and Washington State University, this educational seminar is designed to put viticulture and enology research into the hands of those who need it and to raise awareness of the value of research amongst grape growers and winemakers.
WAVEx Seminars
In response to feedback from past attendees, a more condensed version called WAVEx is held in other wine-producing regions across Washington state. WAVEx is tailored for vintners and includes both research and extension outreach, such as practical winemaking tips.
